Making the craft of development learnable.
The Stud Works turns the real mechanics of how housing and cities get built into clear, hands-on lessons — starting with affordable housing and Community Land Trusts.
The problem
Real estate development is one of the most consequential forces shaping where and how people live — yet it stays locked behind jargon, spreadsheets, and legal documents that only insiders ever read. People who care deeply about housing often can't see how the decisions actually get made, so the conversation gets left to a small group of specialists.
Our mission
We exist to make the invisible systems behind housing understandable — so anyone curious about how cities get built can actually learn it.
Development shouldn't be mysterious. It should be something a student, an advocate, a planner, or a curious neighbor can pick up and genuinely understand. We start with affordable housing and Community Land Trusts because they sit at the intersection of finance, law, and the public good — and because getting them right matters.
How we teach
Most real estate education is passive — slides, lectures, and dense PDFs. We teach by interaction. Every lesson is built around a single idea you can drag, toggle, and pressure-test, so you build intuition through experimentation rather than memorization. You don't just read how a deal works; you feel it move.
- One idea per lesson. We resist cramming. Each lesson makes a single concept genuinely hands-on.
- Faithful to the source. We use real documents and real numbers — never invented figures.
- Skills, not advice. We give you the tools and frameworks to reach your own conclusions, not financial advice.
- Confidence through specifics. No hype, no superlatives — just clear, accurate, useful material.
The model
The Stud Works is an independent, for-profit learning studio. Free lessons are open to everyone; a premium tier funds the deeper, more advanced material. If our free work has helped you, you can also support it directly — that keeps lessons free and accelerates the next ones.
